Review of 2021

Writing this while I’m off work with the lurgy. Feeling rather shite, but at least fever has gone. Only had Covid less than a month ago so it shouldn’t be that, but PCR will verify. (It is, had result now)

As the title says. Firstly I’ll address the goals/aims from last year.

A big AoS tournament remains a goal, but who knows when that will be possible.

It was this year! Sorted out a ticket late after they’d all sold out for a bigger tournament very close to me, sorted a list, got tokens made up, got on a painting schedule to be fully painted, even had a little entourage to go with….got Corona and had to isolate… so it still eludes me 😂 😭

This years goals are are to just paint a lot and log my games, along with keeping a check on bought:painted.

Yes! Logged all my games, with short notes for them all. 17 games of MCP, 26 games of AoS, not too bad with it being lockdown at the start of the year and how many times I’ve had to isolate. Even made an MCP tournament. W/L/D 7/16/3 in AoS, pretty shite really but I guess I played Nighthaunt a lot. MCP 7/10. Not really looked at those before, I guess it tells me I need to up my game a bit! I play for fun above all though.

I’ve amassed 4 AoS armies and they’re all in various states. None are fully painted which still remains a goal.

So for 2021 I’m gonna be steaming ahead with my Nighthaunt, getting it to a fully painted state asap. More on that in my next post.

So one of my aims was to paint my armies to completion, starting with the Nighthaunt. I was steaming ahead, painted so much, got to the last few bits and just couldn’t bring myself to paint anymore of that scheme. I moved on to painting 2k Maggotkin for a tournament late in the year which I nearly did, but contracting covid made me lose enthusiasm.

From this I learnt that I still just love bouncing around painting what I want, it’s much more fun. Finishing actual 2k lists for tournaments will be best for focus when I need to.

Goals/aims for 2022?

Definetly want to keep up with logging my games like I have for the past 3 years

Also keep up the Bought:Painted and make sure it stays on the right balance, I’ve no excuse not to, but we know how these things turn out sometimes. I’d be happy to keep the bought well under 100 and painted over it.

Would like to say- don’t start another army I’ve not already started or bought for! Really should try to stick to this one, it gives me at least 6 armies to bounce around.

Finish an army in its entirety. Could be done. I’d be happy with a few fully painted 2k’s tbf.

Go to a big AoS tournament is still gonna be a goal. Some little ones would be nice too. If I get to 4 I’ll be happy.

Not goals, but atm I’m pretty excited to learn what my favourite army plays like now with its new book, only had one game so far with the Rona and Christmas on the go. Got my destruction army painting in swing already too and excited to see how that turns out

Nighthaunt army update

It’s been a hot minute since the last Post again!

Life got busy since everything started opening up again, as well as real life stuff I’ve been getting games in which has lead to not a lot of downtime for painting.

Ive been back on the Nighthaunt painting horse for a while now (after nearly 3 months off painting nothing at all!) So am gonna do a photo dump of what I’ve finished since last time.

Then it’s on planning the end game for the army. Kurdoss and Olynder are going to be in 100% just because the models are epic. Same with the Black Coach too I reckon. Spirit Hosts I’m not sure on, I couldn’t get them cheap with Mortal Realms sub, so I was thinking of a cool proxy, but I might just pass on them.

The Hexwraiths I was sold on and I have 15 of them…but I’m not sure I like the models…I was toying with the idea of keeping them to use as Black Knights for a possible Gravelord army because the new stuff is amazing, but the idea of yet another army on top of 4 unpainted is a bit silly!

Maybe I’ll leave the Hexies out, maybe I’ll just do 5 and sell the other 10. Who knows, tis a decision for a later date I feel.

Just a quick update on progress.

I’ve been managing to focus on painting just the Nighthaunt, in the hopes to completely finish one of my 4 AoS armies.

Since my last update I’ve been building the next batch of things to paint

This will take me up to my first 2000pts list with the Ghosties (more of painting goal list than gaming, although it is legal)

I recently got my proxy Mourngul which isn’t even on the 2k list, let alone overall army one, which made me forget the Reapers on my painting table and just paint him up immediately.

I’ve wanted the model ever since I saw it but don’t own a 3d printer. I was really impressed on the quality in the end – I remember people showing me terrain and counters they printed about 10 years ago which were not great at all- safe to say the print quality on affordable printers has moved on a bit since then, so much so I’m even considering getting one myself.

I also ordered a couple more other things not on either list – 10 Hexwraiths, 10 Bladegheists and Keldrek which bumps up the bought: painted to 27:37.

On a super windy day my Nighthaunt box flew off my shelf, so I needed to check if anything was broken. I also used it as an excuse for an army shot so far…

Knight of Shrouds & Spirit Tourment

I love the mounted Knight of Shrouds model so did what I usually do when there’s a model I really like and don’t wanna mess up – Procrastinate!

Finally bit the bullet and painted him up and finished off the Spirit Tourment. Came out ok I think.

First Nighthaunt list

A quick blog just to show the first legal list I’ve made. It’s doubtful that it’ll be any good on the tabletop as it’s made without the book and not a lot of tactics in mind, it’s more of a painting list goal to work towards so when I’ve completed it I know I’ve got a 2k painted ‘playable’ force.

A nice mid range goal to have as fully painting everything I’ve collected so far could be a little daunting. This way I’ve got some clarity, a milestone to expand from.

The Nighthaunt army that I’m painting is pretty much unique compared to anything I’ve collected or painted before.

It’s strange because I don’t really have a propper grasp of how the army plays. I’ve looked at the units on the app but I’ve not got the army book and only ever played against them twice in the years I’ve been back into AoS.

Add to that I decided to not play a game until the whole army is finished (‘Rona helps with me not being tempted tbf)

It leads to a unique collecting/painting experience in which I just truly get whatever I like and paint it.

Now I know Myrmourn Banshees don’t look great from perusing the scroll briefly, and that 16 is overkill, but I love the models and I got them cheap, so painted they must be. At least if a new book drops I’ll have more than I need!

One step closer to that painted army, plus it means my Bought:Painted is now back in the black at 5:12 😁

Next up are some Glaivewraith stalkers, 22 more of them 😂

4 Armies in 1 year!

Nah, I’m not deluded. I know that is pretty much impossible for me to do personally. I mean I could if I speed painted, but I want to keep a certain standard for each army.

What armies?

I have 4 AoS ones in different states, I’ve had fun playing and painting each one, keeping it fresh, but I really want to be able to field fully painted armies for the coolness factor and to be able to go to tournaments. Alas….

So I’m focusing on just the one army to completion.

Review of 2020

Been a while as usual but I keep coming back. Sometimes I post regular, more often than not there’s big gaps in the blog but I like to use this as a gaming/painting diary.

Feel it’s only right to address my goals for 2020, which is easy as it’s the last post on here!

Log all my AoS games for the year, same as last year- get at least 52 in again.

Logged all but 3 which I must rectify from memory. Got 16 AoS games in total which isn’t too bad really with ‘Rona on the go. 3 games of Bloodbowl and around 15 games of MCP which I didn’t log. Ive played more than I thought I had.

For fun, i’m going to do the old school “log what minis I bought vs what I painted” obviously it’d be nice to paint more than I buy, but I’m not gonna break into a sweat over it 😂 (currently sitting on 0 for 0)

Huh.

Not gonna lie, forgot about it and not kept up with this at all. Bought a Nighthaunt army. A few Nurgle and Tzeentch bits plus a fair few MCP models.

What did I paint 2020? Let’s have a look, as I sure as hell can’t remember everything!

115 models total!

Not shabby at all, happy with that! Just shows what reduced gaming does for painting output.  A painting room (pictured) overhaul ate into painting time severely too.

I’m going to actually log bought:painted models for 2021 as it could be fun and I really need to clear the backlog.

Go to a ‘big’ tournament and experience the wider community aside from the local-ish one.

Obviously wasn’t possible. I got a doubles tournament in for AoS back in Feb before my local store closed it’s doors for good 🥺.

I also went to my first MCP tournament in August when restrictions had eased a bit. This was great, a much needed social event. The Scene was great and it was the first tournament I’d been to in an age that wasn’t local. Enjoyed it very much even though I did walk away with the spoon.
